    What is Jakavi used for?

Jakavi is used in the treatment of some bone marrow disorders (polycythemia bera, myleofibrosis). It works by preventing your body from producing substances called growth factors. Growth factors are what cause cells to grow and divide. They also cause the spleen and blood cell problems found in these bone marrow disorders. Ruxolitinib is part of a class of medications called JAK inhibitors. Though it is not a cure for these disorders, Jakavi might help with the symptoms which can include pain under left ribs, abdominal discomfort, night sweats, bone/muscle pain, early feelings of fullness from meals, and itching.

    Jakavi Information

    How to Use Jakavi?

Before you start using Jakarvi read the patient information leaflet and direct any questions about this medication or your medical treatment to your pharmacist or doctor. Take ruxolitinib orally with or without food as instructed by your doctor, generally twice a day. If you are unable to swallow the tablets, ask your doctor about other ways to take this medication. The dosage is based on your medical condition, laboratory test results, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking.

Avoid drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit while you’re using ruxolitinib unless your doctor or pharmacist says you can do so. Grapefruit may increase your risk of side effects while on Jakarvi. Your doctor may start you on a low dose and slowly increase it to reduce your risk of negative side effects. Don’t increase your dose or use Jakarvi more often than prescribed or for a longer duration than prescribed. Your condition won’t improve any faster and your chances of encountering negative side effects will increase.

You will get the most benefit from Jakarvi if you take it regularly. A good way to help you remember is to take it at the same time each day. Don’t stop Jakarvi without talking to your doctor first as some conditions can become worse when it is suddenly stopped. You can experience symptoms such as trouble breathing, dizziness, fever, and unusual bruising/bleeding. To prevent these symptoms while you’re stopping treatment your doctor will likely reduce your dosage over a period of time. Report new or worsening symptoms to your doctor.

    Jakavi Drug Interactions?

There are some instances where two medications should not be used together at all. In other circumstances you may still be able to use two medications despite an interaction. In these cases your doctor might want to change the dose or other precautions might be necessary. When you are taking this medication you should give your doctor a list of the other medications you take to make sure there are no negative interactions. The following list is incomplete, for more information on drug interactions talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

Combining Jakarvi with the following medications is generally not recommended, but could be required in some cases. If your doctor has prescribed you both medications they may adjust the dose or how often you use one or both medications.
