What is Multaq used for?
If you have had certain kind of irregular heartbeat but have a normal rhythm now Multaq is used. It assists in maintaining a normal heart rhythm and lowers chances of having to go to a hospital for atrial fibrillation. Dronedarone is an antiarrhythmic drug. If you have permanent atrial fibrillation you should not take dronedarone because of the risk of serious side effects.

Warning
If you have severe heart failure that makes you short of breath while resting or during light activity do not take Multaq. If you have a certain kind of irregular heartbeat (permanent atrial fibrillation) that will not or cannot be changed back to a normal heart rhythm do not take this medication. Dronedarone can increase risk of stroke, death, or the need to be treated for heart failure if you have these conditions. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. If you have new or worsening symptoms of heart failure such as swelling feet/ankles, unusual tiredness, breath, sudden/unusual weight gain.
How to Use Multaq?
Take Multaq by mouth with food as instructed by your doctor, generally twice per day. Avoid grapefruits and grapefruit juice while on dronedarone unless your doctor has advised it is safe as grapefruit can increase the chance of side effects. To gain the most benefit from this medication take it regularly. Do not adjust how you take dronedarone even if you feel well. Your doctor may instruct you to take an additional medication to lower the risk of getting blood clots, carefully follow your doctor’s instructions. If your heartbeat or pulse becomes irregular or fast get medical help immediately.
